The first German chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, may not have liked experiments, but he used a car phone in his official Mercedes. It is one of the “VIP mobile phones” and their predecessors exhibited in the HNF.
The collection was put together between 1991 and 2010 by Telekom employee Heinz Sänger (1943–2011) from Dortmund; the HNF owes its presentation in Paderborn to his son, Olaf.
The collection unites devices from politicians and pop singers, sportspeople and actors as well as Pope Benedict XVI. The exhibition shows mobile phones from Bill Clinton, Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schröder alongside those from Roy Black, Dieter Bohlen, Heino and Madonna.
Visitors will find mobiles from Muhammad Ali, Franz Beckenbauer, Wladimir Klitschko and Michael Schumacher as well as Tom Cruise, Thomas Gottschalk, Johannes Heesters and Roger Moore. Also included are phones from magician David Copperfield, quizmaster Günter Jauch, super model Claudia Schiffer and comedian Otto Waalkes, recognisable by his ‘Ottifants’.
The display cabinet contains only a small part of the collection, but the phones are replaced regularly.
